3 Temptations of a Leader

People Matter (3 Temptations Leaders Face) January 25, 2012

One of the most challenging issues when it comes to leadership and ministry is dealing with people. (Other than that, it’s quite simple.) :-)
AND, if we are not careful we will allow ourselves to become so distracted that we will actually begin to care for other things way more than the people that Jesus died for and has called us to take care of.
Recently in an all staff meeting I shared with our staff three things that we are tempted to love more than people…and how we’re going to do all we can to make sure that because people matter to God they matter to us as well.
Temptation #1 – To Love The Process More Than People
I’m a type-A, obsessive compulsive person, and so I love organization, structure and systems that make things easier for me to manage. However, not all people are like that.
The danger is that in church we would develop a process for volunteers, discipleship and such and then expect EVERYONE to “fall in line” and do what we think is best. In other words, we approach people with a scientific approach rather than an artistic one.
(By the way, I believe God IS an artist! Don’t believe me…check out the sunsets for the next several nights, none of them will be the exact same. I like to think He whips out His paintbrush and makes it new every evening!)
Don’t get me wrong, the church NEEDS certain processes and such; however, all too often I have fallen into the trap of trying to use a process that has been developed rather than really taking the time to find out more about the person that needs to be developed.
When a person isn’t a fit into a process that has been developed we need to stop and see what is going on in that person’s life. It’s not their job to fit into our system, it’s our job to discover where they are and then lead them to a place where they can grow in their relationship with Christ.
Temptation #2 – To Love Progress More Than People
I love progress, all leaders do. However, if we are not careful we will fall so in love with the idea of every chart moving up and to the right that we lose sight of what really matters when it comes to ministry–people.
I get the fact that some people simply cannot move forward with a church or organization. They can’t handle change and simply refuse to go along with all that the Lord is doing. But…we should never assume that just because people don’t seem to “get it” that they are automatically against what we are doing. Maybe they have questions. Maybe they have legitimate concerns. Maybe they don’t fully understand all that is going on. AND…if those three things are true then it isn’t really their fault that they are not “on board,” it’s the leaders fault.
There will be times we need to slow down, take a breath and offer grace filled explanations to all that is taking place…and when a leader or organization refuses to do that because it would simply take too much time then they have fallen in love with progress more than people.
Temptation #3 – To Love Preferences More Than People
If you’ve been in ministry long enough then there are people (or types of people) that you prefer to stay away from. (Don’t lie!!!) Why do we prefer to keep them at a safe distance? Simple…they’re messy, and we, for the most part, love for things to be neat, clean and predictable.
We prefer clean people and clean situations…and so we isolate ourselves from messy situations. However, one of the things I’ve discovered in the past 20 years of ministry is that isolation really does lead to me being ineffective as a pastor. And…if I isolate myself from the mess then I am not becoming more like Jesus because He always walked straight towards the mess.
If I am going to follow Christ I cannot allow personal preference to trump my love for people because in doing so then I totally communicate that I’ve forgotten what Christ did for me! After all, if Jesus would have walked away from the mess rather than walking towards it…we’d all be in a lot of trouble!

Increasing Your Capacity To Lead

Capacity is the power of containing or holding. In the context of the mind, capacity is the power of receiving ideas or knowledge. Leaders should desire to increase their capacity in several areas.
Increase is a personal decision. It does not happen automatically or overnight, but gradually as you make certain strides toward increasing in certain areas. Here are five areas where good leaders become great leaders through increase.
1. Increase your faith capacity.
Faith is the substance of vision, dreams, and moving into the future. Faith is needed to be a great leader because you must have faith to believe and see what you believe will happen.
In what areas do leaders need to increase in faith? Increase in faith in God and God’s Word. Have faith that God will provide all that is necessary as the need arises.
2. Increase your people capacity.
Leadership and ministry is all about people. It is relational, caring, loving, and serving people. Getting along with and caring for people is at the heart of leaders with people capacity.
Henry Ford once said, “Why is it that I always get the whole person when what I want is a pair of hands?” This is the attitude in leaders who have little capacity for people. People are not machines, but individuals. We must recognize and affirm the importance of the whole person. Respect, dignify, and honor people.
3. Increase your change capacity.
Things change! We need to change, be flexible, be adjustable. Change is not the enemy. Changing the wrong thing is.
Change is also one of the greatest agents of momentum. It is okay to change the way you do things as long as the change does not violate your core principles and values.
4. Increase your grace capacity.
Our heart and life make up a container that must be filled to capacity with grace. We need capacity to be gracious, graceful, grace filled, and grace motivated.
“Graceful leadership” implies that leadership within the context and life of the Christian community is, or at least ought to be, different from other kinds of leadership. Our leadership should be motivated out of genuine concern for the needs of others and deference to their condition – how we can best serve them through our leadership.
5. Increase your team capacity.
Coach rather than control. Mentor as well as manage. Strengthen as well as supervise. Be a leader who empowers. Create shared vision.
When you create a team atmosphere, more people contribute, you get more ideas, and more people are reached. Don’t hold too tightly to your ministry. It belongs to God. Great leaders are champions of the team.

Was the basic premise of the blog I read recently. They author was trying to explain, how the church has gotten off track, and in the first short paragraph he used these words…

Missional
Spirituality
Abstraction
Enlightenment
Rationalism
Reductionism
Utopianism
Consumerism
Programism

I don’t think it’s that complicated! It can’t be! How could you explain that to a pastor with the equivalent of a 3rd grade education in the up country of West Africa? Answer…You couldn’t.

I think God love the Simple

I think the purpose of God’s church and His plan for His people is simple. Simple people are the one’s He uses. So, it must be simple for the simple (Like me) to get it.

Love God with all you have
Love others with all you have
Help People..Find, Follow and Be Like Jesus
Now, if what you are doing is making that happen. Go back, and check how you are doing it, and change it. But don’t complicate it. Just feels like the simple God, gets lost in all that.

Rewards of Fasting

Here’s what Jesus said about fasting:

When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Jesus said that our heavenly Father rewards fasting. Following are seven rewards of fasting:

1. Fasting turns back God’s wrath and judgment.
Moses recorded that God was angry enough to destroy Aaron and the children of Israel because of their gold cow idol (Dt 9:18-20). But, as we know, God’s wrath was turned back after Moses fasted and prayed. There has been much said and written the past few years about God’s wrath and judgment on different nations. I’m convinced that Christians can turn back God’s judgment through fasting and prayer. Of course that will never happen unless God’s people get more concerned about the next generation than their next meal

2. Fasting releases prophetic strategies for victory.
The Moabites, Amonites, and several other hostile nations were arrayed against Israel. (See 2 Chr 20:1-30.) King Jehoshaphat called for a fast. You know you are in a desperate situation when a guy nicknamed J-PHAT calls for a fast. During the fast, a prophetic word was given that laid out God’s strategy for their battle. “No swords. No shields. No spears. Get your tambourines ready, we’re going to war!” I’m sure there were some battle-hardened warriors who thought that word was way off. After all, “We’ve never fought a battle like that before.” As always, God knew best. If we are willing to skip a few meals, we may receive prophetic strategies to influence our cities for God’s glory. They may be new and untried strategies, but if they are from God, we can be confident they will work.

3. Fasting activates people and provision for God’s work.
Nehemiah’s building project was preceded by corporate fasting. Would it have been as successful without the fasting? I don’t think so. In 1984, God opened the door for our fledgling Manila church to have its own (rented) building in Manila’s crowded University-Belt as we fasted and prayed. Each time our church has expanded to a new building to own or rent, a vital part of our fund-raising strategy has been prayer and fasting.

4. Fasting releases wisdom and favor.
Daniel and his friends went on a partial fast (vegetables and water only). At the end of the fast, they were compared with the rest of the young men of Babylon. The results are recorded in Daniel 1:20. In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom. Would you like to be ten times better than your competitors? Just lay off the pizza for a few days and seek God wholeheartedly.

5. Fasting clarifies and redirects callings and ministries.
Paul, Barnabas, and a few other Antioch church leaders were me eting together, and while they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said: set apart for me Barnabas . . . (Acts 13:1-3). While they were fasting, the Holy Spirit spoke. Would He have spoken this new direction even if they had not fasted? Probably. The real question is: Would they have been sensitive enough to hear the Holy Spirit speak if they had not fasted? Maybe. Maybe not. Are you seeking God for a new direction in your life or ministry? Good time to fast.

6. Fasting breaks demonic strongholds.
On one occasion, the disciples unsuccessfully attempted to cast out a demon. When they asked Jesus why they had failed, He responded: this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting (Matt 17:21). This seems to indicate that there are certain demonic situations that, for one reason or another, can only be defeated through fasting. Isaiah said that true fasting will loose chains . . . untie the cords of yoke . . . set the oppressed free and break every yoke (Is 58:6). Have you ever encountered a stubborn demonic situation? Maybe it’s the kind that only goes out by prayer and fasting.

7. Fasting increases spiritual power.
Luke records that Jesus was full of the Holy Spirit and that He was led by the Spirit. After His forty day fast, He returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit (Lk 4:1,14). How many Christians do you know who are full of the Spirit and led by the Spirit, but do not walk in the power of the Spirit? Need more power? Spiritual power is one of the rewards of fasting.

Leadership Begins With Trust

There are many places you can start as a leader, but the best place is…The Beginning.

Leadership begins with Trust. No matter who you are, or who you are with, if you don’t have trust no one will care what you say. Trust is hard to earn, and very easy to lose. It’s an asset we must guard with great diligence.

I have seen three critical steps to being effective as a leader.

Trust > Influence > Authority

We should gain the trust of those we are called or intend to lead. Trust comes before influence. Leadership is all about influence, influence gives you the “critical mass” necessary to create movement and momentum with those you’re with. Influence comes after, and only on the heels of trust. No trust, No influence.

After Trust and Influence comes Authority. Authority gives you the ability to make decisions that will affect the outcome of the vision and the team you’re leading. Authority should be used as tool for the movement of the vision, not as weapon of reprisal or punishment. If you abuse authority, or use it for personal gain, you will soon be without it.

Hmmm… What happens if you come into a position where you are given authority, and haven’t had the opportunity to earn trust and influence. Well…”Put your big girl panties on.” That’s a hard assignment, and not for the impatient or power hungry. That spot requires humility, love, servant leadership and patience.

The best scenario is to earn it before you get it. If you get it before you earn it…You will have to pay a higher price. But…Trust and Influence is worth the cost. You will never be effective without them.

Are You Waiting On God With Any Expectations For 2012?

Psalm 5:3 NIV says, "In the morning, LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly."

KJV says, "My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up."

As the new year draws closer, there's a growing anticipation in my heart for the things that God has in stored for me, my family & Destiny Christian Church. I hope that you're also excited for this upcoming year.

I love this passage because it teaches us to direct our prayers to the Lord so that He can consider our request. Unfortunately, at times, we try to direct God about our request and expect Him to be a genie in a bottle that makes our wish His command. Let's resolve instead to say, "Lord your command is my wish." If we know that God loves us. Let's believe and expect that God has our best interest in mind. Let's choose to believe that His Word that according to Jeremiah 29:11 He has a divine plan for us that are of peace and not of evil. Let's believe in Philippians 1:6 and be confident in this that He who began a good work in us will complete it. Let's continue to believe that the God of Hebrews 12:2 is the author and the finisher of our faith.

I don't know what you're expecting in the new year but just remember, God's got your best interest in mind - because He loves you.

Destiny's Temporary Move To Aloha Tower: "When you're thrown a curve ball - hit it out of the park."

Our new Church had to relocate from our usual meeting place at University of Hawaii Campus Center Ballroom & Art Building in Manoa Valley, because UH decided to close their facilities for the holidays for three weekends. We were caught off guard & had to scramble to find a place. Through a great friend (TC), we were able to get usage of the Aloha Tower Marketplace outdoor concert area.

Ever gotten last minute news that forced you to scramble around and make major adjustments to your normal routine. Well, it happened to us recently and we had to find a new location for our church service for three straight weeks before we return to UH. I'm grateful for such an awesome team of leaders that helped me to strategize quickly and adjust to the challenging situation that we were facing. We chose to see this situation as a God opportunity. We decided that we were going to take this curve ball and hit it out of the park.

The Lord put on our hearts to use these three weeks at Aloha Tower to be used more as an outreach opportunity to our community. So today, we had our Aloha Kalikimaka Concert with some of our awesome artist from our church. Worship filled the air & it was so awesome. We also started an annual outreach called the Aloha Kalikimaka Blessing that gives away $100 cash to every single parent we invite to church. It was a tear jerker for sure to see our single parents receive their blessing from the Lord. Our church attendance increased & many lives were touched by God's love.

Next week, we have our New Year's Barbecue Bash. We are having our regular church service with praise & worship then a Inspirational message from the Bible. It will be followed by some good ole barbecue and fellowship. We are anticipating a great turn out. Lesson learned: Sometime's life will throw you some curve balls...but remember, take a swing and hit it out of the park. Let's Do This!

Why I'm Excited For This Christmas Morning

The Lord impressed upon the hearts of our church members - an assignment - to care for the single parents. Although, we hope to reach out to everyone in our sphere of influence. This assignment was specifically for us for Christmas day. On Christmas morning we will begin an annual tradition for our church called the "Aloha Kalikimaka Blessing" in conjunction with the "Aloha Kalikimaka Concert". The atmosphere of Aloha Tower will be filled with worship as we are displaying some our local artist. We know that God's presence will bring healing and restoration through His music. At the end of our service, we will be awarding "single parents" who are referred by our church members to receive a $100 cash gift. We are totally stoked for this!

We are honored by this divine responsibility to share God's love to His single parents on Christmas day. We know that some single parents within our communities could use the extra monetary gift. We are blessed as a church family to give of our resources to be a blessing to families that are in need. As a 9 month old church, we are only blessing 40 single parents this Christmas. We believe that this number will increase every year.

We know that this is just one of many assignments that the Lord has given to DESTINY. We are honored and blessed to be a part of God's plan to reach out to our communities. Please pray for us as well as all the great churches in your cities that are sharing God's love in their own unique ways.

That's why I'm excited for this Christmas Morning.

If You're A Parent Believing To Send Your Kids To College. Here's Some Encouragement...

So I thought I might blog about feeling so blessed that my youngest daughter, Shayna, completed her college studies at UNLV last week. Earlier in May my middle daughter, Careena, graduated from the University of Hawaii. My oldest daughter, Talia, attended a small college in the bay area called Menlo College several years ago.

I couldn't help but get a bit emotional when Shayna walked to the middle of the stage to receive her diploma before a packed out arena. As her named was called out, I couldn't help but thank the Lord for His amazing provision. In the natural, my wife and I didn't have the means to put all three of our daughters through college but God is so faithful. I truly believe that when we take the steps of faith to fulfill a desire in our hearts, God will some how make a way when there seem to be no way. He is the dream giver and the dream fulfiller. All we need to do is believe. Even when we are faithless - and trust me when I say that I was there many times - but God continued to show his faithfulness through scholarships & grants. We just needed to believe. I'm not sure what you're facing in your life during this holiday season. But I want to encourage you to not give up on your dreams. Remember, God is the dream giver and He is the dream fulfiller. Hang on to your dream. The Way Maker is near. If He can do it for me and my family, He will do it for you.

Stay The Course...your Destiny awaits. Since my three daughters were with us, we decided to enjoy some vacation time at the Vegas malls & Mount Charleston.

This is an old saying, which means, “if what you are using is not moving…dismount.” Sometimes even the best laid, thought out & mind mapped ideas and systems just don’t work! They simply don’t produce the results we need. So what do you do…? What do you do…?

Keep doing it, because if we stop, we will feel like a failure.
Keep doing it, because if we stop, those involved will be hurt.
Keep doing it, because if we stop, people will get mad and leave.
Keep doing it, because if we stop, the “others” still doing it will get mad.
Keep doing it, because if we stop, we look stupid, no back up plan!
STOP doing it, because if we STOP, we might actually find something that works.
Your answer to that question, may very well determine your impact and fruitfulness.

Time to evaluate EVERYTHING! Put it all on the table, no sacred cows allowed to stay! All on the table for honest prayerful evaluation. And if you find (and you know you will) something that is dead and not producing what will you do? What will you do?

My First Day In New Zealand

What an awesome first day here in Auckland. Started off the day with a one-hour walk through the suburbs of South Auckland over looking Manatua Bay. It was breathtaking. Then I spoke to several hundred young men at Kelston All-Boys School. I ended the day by speaking at Every Nation Leadership Institute. My host has me busy doing ministry everyday. I love it. Please continue to pray for me for the Lord to speak through me to encourage the people of New Zealand. God is good. ~Ciao for now.
